GH Mumm’s “Agent Provoceteur” (hosted by xBizzle)

At the World Famous Suzie Wong’s Club, my home boy Showtyme from Shanghai threw a crazy Champagne party for GH Mumm who he represents for events at clubs. Showtyme needed a true personality on the mic that night, someone who could capture the class of a model-champagne party but also get the crowd hyped up and ready to pop some bottles… obviously he hollered at Bizzle.

Bizzle always reps that NC

Bizzle always reps that NC

Two days before the show, I met up with Showtyme, Sbazzo, XIV (who was only in town for one night as he is filming a movie down in Yunnan) and M2 el Maya. We got some drinks at the Saddle and started talkin’ business. Showtyme let me know more about the scene down in Shanghai, sayin that Beijing was really the only place where hip hop shows were poppin’ off regularly anymore, other than smaller cities. He said the real money is in the alcohol company parties, which he specializes in now.

Anyway, I agreed to do the show, but he really didn’t prep me at all for what I was going to do. He said he would get the info and all the details for the show later that night… then two days goes by and nothing. We tried to meet up, but for some reason we never did and Friday evening rolls around and I walk into rehersals without the slightest idea what I am getting myself into…

Luckily for me, Showtyme is a true maestro for these kind of events and he had EVERYTHING worked out. Let’s just say I knew it was my kind of party when I saw there were Hot Hot Hot dancers, a couple singers, crazy spandex outfits, cases upon cases of champange; so of course Bizzle felt quite at home.

Agent 003 was my fave

Agent 003 was my fave

During rehersals I worked out my lines and figured out the timing, which had to be REALLY specific to fit with their show. It took a little while but after about an hr we got it down and we all went our separate ways to prepare for the 11:30pm meeting time for the show. Oh, and I forgot to mention the dress code…  suit and tie, but I made some adjustments…

The theme of the party was “Agent Provocateur” ….think spandex +  lingerie + James Bond + Russian models + champange  …..and you get the idea.

Anyway before I knew it, my homegirl (what up swilly!) and I were getting drinks in Sanlitun and I had my iPod going over the intro again and again, rehearsing my timing…

I thought it was going to be nothing at first, but I was having a hard time doing everything they wanted in English, then doing it in Chinese and also matching it to the timing. That was the hardest part for me, because the Club owner, the promoter, the dancers, the singers, were all making special requests for things to say and how to say them;  I had to do it in two languages; and do it all in 1 minute 14 seconds. Easy right?

So now…the evening begins….

Me and my arm candy (so what, who doesn’t) show up and get right into the VIP room to find all the dancers, models, singers, etc. getting loose on Grey Goose (rhyme master)… obviously we join right in. Before long, the promoter is shoutin’ “5 minutes” and we all start putting our game faces on… thats when the promoter passes me part of my “outfit”… the red gloves.

not gangsta

not gangsta

Now I am not the type to say no to a promoters request, but these were definitely girl gloves. I tried to put one on and it was shredded to pieces before it got all the way on. I tried the other one and it fit, but it was tight. After some discussion, I agreed to wear it, since I thought it brought out my King of Pop side…

5 minutes goes by and the promoter is back, we’re ready to go… but… we can’t because the CLUB IS TOO PACKED, and there isn’t enough security to escort us to the stage… so we wait 15 minutes. Finally security gets with it and we start the procession (we had over 12 people performing) downstairs. We get about halfway to the stage, in the middle of a packed club looking like a mamba line of red and black dressed strippers and pimps.

CROWD TOO PACKED, CANT GET ON STAGE

a bouncer yells at me. But at this point we can’t go forward, we can’t go back…we’re trapped.

going nuts before we even got on stage!

going nuts before we even got on stage!

(I know this story is epic… but keep going, your almost there!)

So NOW we have to retreat to a new area to wait for them to clear the stage off…

20 minutes later we get the cue that we’re going on, about 40 minutes late. As I am walking up to the stage, I notice the dancers getting in position really fast… then I hear the intro SONG START…remember all that jazz I said about timing…well I was SCREWED because I wasn’t even on stage yet and my timing was already off.

more red.

more red.

I jump on stage and recover, barely, and the show starts without a big issue.  Then in the middle of my lines, a Chinese girl starts pulling on my coat trying to get my attention! Damn girl! I am trying to do a show and she won’t leave me alone. (I want to say I hated it, but I didn’t, at all)

Then this blonde jumped on stage to catch a photo with the Bizzle… don’t hate that either.

Love the Glove. (check out my glowstick haha)

Love the Glove. (check out my glowstick haha)

lady gaga singer

looked just like her...and sang like her too. kinda bad.

So after a cool dance show, the Russian singer did her thing (Lady Gaga impersonation) and I ended up getting TOO hype for the party (the dance coach told me to chill on the excessive hyping) haha…when you get Bizzle you get 110% HYPE homie!

Then, in just a few minutes the whole thing was pretty much over and we were popping bottles WITH bottles and models (seriously you should try it).

After the other performers were finished, the whole crew partied in the VIP for a while and that’s when my Russian girls met the Russian dancers and everyone was putting on their best “Russian Club faces”. It was entertaining to say the least…

red.

red.

Soon enough, Showtyme and I even had a little freestyle battle session, and dude can spit no doubt! After a few bottles of Mumms, the Russians and I moved on to Vics and got our dance on till the early morning.

That’s when things got really interesting, but that’s a story for another type of website …

Brief Note: DJ Krush vs DJ Stretch Armstrong

Poor planning (by yours truly) combined with a Saturday night music line-up that had two big-time shows PLUS a good friends birthday party meant that Bizzle had to make some sacrifices. So a few weekends ago, when DJ Krush came to town and absolutely ROCKED Yugong Yishan… I wasn’t there. But here is the report my partners in crime had to say about the show…

DJ Krush, while not that well-known to some in Beijing in fact drew a larger than usual crowd, with a good mix of expat and Chinese hip-hop heads, hipsters, hot girls, and perhaps DJ show first timers. With his Trip-hop influence, there was a good cross-over of Electronic/House music fans in the spot as well. The crowd danced and grooved to the surprising mixes and everyone was impressed with DJ Krush‘s eclectic music tastes. Again tho, rumor has it that DJ Wordy really tore the house down with a set that had the entire crowd generally wild’n out.  The refreshing news I heard was that there wasn’t as noticeable lack of hip hop music mixed in, as has been an issue at recent “mash-up” or “turnablist” DJ shows at Yugong… but none the less, I heard that it turned into a big crazy dance party… and I am the chump that missed it.

Here are some photos from the show to check out:

(sigh)...those hands could have been mine...DOH

(sigh)...two of those hands could have been mine...DOH!

DJ Krush crushin it.

DJ Wordy shows some love

DJ Wordy shows some love

Now the DJ Stretch Armstrong show at PUNK, in fact, I did make it for the last set of this show and it was interesting to say the least. (As I walked in, DJ Wordy walked up to me and decided to autograph my shirt with the sharpie I had… right on the very front pocket. Nice. )

My previous encounters with Stretch‘s music had been hearing his name shouted out on tracks by RA the Rugged Man, 50 Cent‘s Guess Who’s Back Mixtape, and he was all over the GTA3 soundtrack, basically playing all NYC hip hop ish. Tonite though, by the time I had arrived, Stretch was playing  electronic mash-up music, and to be honest, I didn’t hear ANY hip hop at all. I can’t say I heard the entire set, but the people there all said he basically played a few pieces of tracks, then switched into electronic music. To be fair, the crowd at PUNK definitely more suits electronic music more so than hip hop, and I salute his flexibility; but me and a few other cats came there specifically to hear some of that good NYC ish, and it just wasn’t getting played.

So, I decided to go talk to him and over to the DJ Booth… keep in mind I was dressed like a damn fool this night, (it was for a party, long story) but he thought it was funny and we started chatting as he was finishing his set. I asked him if he was interested in checking out another “real hip hop club” and he said he was. So he cut off his set, packed up his stuff and after we had a drink or two, my whole crew and DJ Stretch hopped in the elevator to head out to the club. Then, right as we got to the lobby floor, he said he needed to stop off at his room to make a call to his lawyer about some lawsuit and would have to meet up in a few minutes, he gave me his number and said to call him in like 20 and we would meet up. Sorry Stretch, but it was WAY too late for that, and we went straight to Vics and got our party on without him. Sad. So since I never did call him, I do hope he found his way and had a good time in Beijing. And that’s the story of how I met DJ Stretch Armstrong.

“They Ain’t Ready” video shoot (behind the scenes ish)

This weekend, Sbazzo and Young Kin teamed up with Belgian director Said to film the new music video for “They Ain’t Ready” a single from Sbazzo‘s upcoming solo LP. I got some insider info and grabbed some sneak photo shots for the You Call That Hip Hop family to check out.

What Sbazzo says to expect from the video: the newest gear on the streets, some cool art work, some babes, Kung Fu, and lots of black lights…sounds like my kind of party.

YouCallThatHipHop.com Update: 12/14/09

If you noticed the posts have been a little bit slower or less than usual the past week or two, its true, I have been really busy getting ready for my USA “tour” coming up next week, working out a few show deals around Beijing, and this weekend had my early birthday celebrations….so before I let it go tooo long, I want to throw a lil’ Chip-Chop and Xiao Bizzle update to everyone in leading up to that!

Q-Bert: The Q-bert shows were both big hits with local hip hop heads, hipsters and with the random drunk girl in skirt and army boots (I saw her at one party and I heard she was at the other party…wearing the same outfit, def way to cold for that kinda stuff but power to her). Q threw pretty much the same set at Bling and Yugong, and his first rate scratchin’ and juggling skills were on display. He had another epic battle/coop with DJ Wordy (who I heard was playing better tunes than ANYONE all night, big up to Wordy) Overall, another great set of shows for Qbert, many in a long line of China performances. See below for pics.

Maya and Bizzle @ Mix 11/11/09

Funny story on this one… So Maya and I meet up in the Vics/Mix parking lot around 2:30am the other day, plotting to make a visit to one of the clubs. I told Maya that I had been in talks with the Management at Mix recently about doing some shows, so I figured we would get treated pretty well if we went over there to party. Turns out I was right.

I call my contact who meets us at the front entrance to take us inside… then we walk directly from the entrance up to the DJ Booth and on stage, he hands us a bottle of Champagne and glasses and we start toasting. Quite the entrance, even by Beijing standards. But then before we can even send smiles to the crowd of 1500+ people partying on the dance floor below, the Music Director comes over with two Mics, hands them to us and basically says…”Go!”

Now this is a precarious position for me, and other MC’s as well.

I love doing what I do, and admittedly, I mostly rap for fun, occasionally for business if I’m lucky, and most of all I enjoy being part of the scene and helping to promote other up-and-coming guys. But this situation is different because I have been negotiating a contract for shows at this location, and now without that contract or even an agreement, we were about to do a free show? Maya has just finished two tours across China and is getting booked for show after show for next year, and I am supposed to ask him to just do a few impromptu songs for free? Not a fun position to be in.

Anyway, Maya was cool about it and since we both were in the right mood for it, we got it live and did a little impromptu set of freestyles and Maya even did some verses from his new album while I hyped the crowd for Mix the way I usually do. They even threw on some Daddy Yankee and Maya got the house rocking with his back-up vocals to that. All I can say is that we def got the crowd excited again (it was already around 3am+) and after 2-3 songs, we took our bows and went up to the VIP room, so over all a good experience. I dropped a lil’ Chinese free-style that I think got people’s attention as well…they were not expecting that to come outta my mouth!

All in all, it was  a fun occasion, the guest DJ Aioshi from Japan was a cool cat and he loved that we came up and rapped like that, instead of being offended that we came on during his set. He knew it wasn’t our plan, we just were going with the flow.

The funniest part of the night was when I first got on stage, I had to take my jacket off and leave it up there. After our “set” I realized I had forgotten it up there and wanted to go get it. The bosses of Mix for whatever reason didn’t think I could handle getting the jacket myself, so they had this GIANT of a bouncer (literally the biggest Chinese guy I’ve ever seen) basically piggyback carry me through the crowd to the stage, got my jacket, and then back again to the VIP. Hilarious. True Story, piggy back.

Let’s keep in mind I was not totally prepared for a performance that night, as we had been at some “Business casual” style parties before, I actually had a shirt and tie on! Luckily I had on proper shoes and a hat, but still, even tho I might have looked a little bit out of place at first, the crowd ended up showing us love either way.

Trip to the USA:

Xiao Bizzle is going to be out of town for a few weeks coming up but that doesn’t mean their will not be updates and news here on YCTHH.com! I am looking forward to meeting up with my people Young Flu who has recently dropped a new album, and KAZE who is blowing up doing big things with a new record deal. I will make sure get some interviews with them focusing on their upcoming tour in China (that I am setting up!)

NC, DC, NYC, and maybe a little LA to holler at Aidge from the Aesthetics Crew. Holla if you are in any of these places and we can build!

Till next time…

BeatBox Session with Rahzel

Bizzle, Rahzel and DJ JS-1

Old School (aka fuzzy) Photo w/ Bizzle, Rahzel and DJ JS-1

One thing I got to do recently that was cool for me, was to spend some down-time with Rahzel and DJ JS-1 as their “guide” and part-time caretaker in Beijing.

As part of the YinEnt squad, I was tasked with taking care of Rahzel and JS for one night, and we definately has a cool evening, mostly just chillin, talking about their experiences touring, hip hop around the world, and then we went to The Park boys’ studio to record an episode for their Chinese radio show.

Sbazzo met us there, and after everyone had a chance to meet, they got down to business and while recording  the radio show, unexpectedly, we got an improptu Beat box session from Rahzel, “live” on the air!

For the www.youcallthathiphop.com family, I snuck a lil video action in, so here you go!

Big Shout to The Park 嘻哈公园 for all their support!

Interview- Rahzel: Da Godfather of Noyze

Xiao Bizzle got a chance to ask Rahzel a few questions about his upcoming performance at Bling, his feelings about the global state of hip hop and what he does in case of a “hiccup” on stage…

20091100061832702216-100008623

Bizzle: How would you describe your musical style or art form to someone who wasn’t familiar with hip hop?
Rahzel: Human beatbox, vocal percussionist, mcee… i do all styles of music [but] with my mouth…

Bizzle: Where do you get your inspiration?
Rahzel: I am inspired by all types of music and sounds around me everyday… by listening to many types of music and sounds… REALLY listening to all the layers of sounds… I am inspired when i go to countries around the world and see hundreds of other beatboxers. I have influenced them to keep this movement alive and that inspires me to keep going…

Bizzle: Being perhaps the first commercially successful BeatBoxer, what advice would you give to an aspiring Chinese (or any nationality) vocal percussionist?
Rahzel: First, do not copy or duplicate what i do. That is not the path to your own success. Many times kids want to show that they can do what i do by doing my routines. They cant. The best thing to do is to come up with your own style, your own beats, your own techniques, and that will make you stand out on your own and be able to start a career. Work on your stage presence and your stage show. Just doing fast beats 800mph is not good. Work on your sounds and learn to separate the different sounds and tones within the beats you make… Never give up or be discouraged… practice practice practice… I’m still learning and developing my own techniques everyday.

Bizzle: Would you be interested in working with any Chinese hip-hop artists? (Because, I can arrange that… haha)
Rahzel: Yes of course! Myself and DJ JS-1 REALLY want to record with Chinese Hip Hop artists! Seriously.. lets make this happen and make history!

Bizzle: As the “Godfather of Noyze” you have traveled around quite a bit with the Roots and on your own, and soon to be visiting China, so on a bigger picture, where do you see the direction of hip hop going Internationally? (Will it ever surpass or equal the movement in the US? )

Rahzel: It has already surpassed the US movement. In every country in the world there are now hip hop acts and groups who sell many many records and make very good music. If you add up all the countries and all the groups, it is a lot! The problem is the language barrier and promotion. All countries play and support US artists, but not every country, including the US support or play any music from other international acts. It is difficult for French hip hop to break into the UK, Germany, Japan, etc because of the language difference. Many people speak English around the world and that helps US artists. Plus, hip hop originated in the states and it will always be the “mecca” of hiphop, so obviously US artists will always do well, but we love a lot of international hiphop. JS-1 is now working on an international hip hop album with ONLY mcees from several different countries…

Bizzle: What do you expect the audience to be like for an American beatboxer/MC at a luxury hip hop club (Bling) in Beijing to be like?
Rahzel: We are not sure what to expect. Hopefully it will be a good hiphop crowd and not a commercial dance crowd. however, it does not matter, we bring our traditional form of hiphop, two turntables and a microphone, all over the globe, and people love and respect it. For those who know, they will love it and for those who are not sure what we are doing, they will get the ultimate lesson in real hiphop, turntablism and beatboxing.

Bizzle: What is one (or two) things you want to do in China while you are here?
Rahzel: Visit the Great Wall of China, the Forbidden City, and other historical sites. It is not very often that we get to be here and take in the amazing culture and history of your country. China has one of the longest and greatest histories as a country and we are excited to visit some of these sites. And second, we hope to bring some good hiphop to the people and influence some more people to beatbox, scratch records, or just appreciate hiphop music.

Bizzle: What brands of hats, sneaks or other gear are you feeling right now?
Rahzel: I always love my new era hats. I have a huge collection. I am not brand specific. I go shopping and simply buy what i like. whatever catches my eye and i think looks good on me. So its not really about the brand name, but more about what i like or dont like. And DJ JS-1 is traditional old school Rock Steady Crew and loves his Adidas always!

Bizzle: Have you ever been beat-boxing on stage and had a major “hiccup” or breakdown? How do you handle that?
Rahzel: Yes once or twice. I am human, it happens. If i have to cough of hiccup, i find a way to fit it in the beat or pause and keep going. It does not happen often but if it does, i kinda like it, because it shows i am human. We are prepared to handle whatever happens on stage!

Thanks to Rahzel for the interview!

D.I.B.C- Diggin’ in a 胡同 (Hutong) Near You!

Go DJ!

Go DJ!

Diggin‘: The act of looking for vinyl records (wax) in a non-corporate, non-chain-retail establishment. It may mean mom & pop independent record shops, but could also refer to thrift stores, flea markets, estate sales, record shows, or any other sort of second-hand place for vinyl. (www.UrbanDictionary.com)

American Hip Hop’s most famous ‘Diggaz’ gotta be D.I.T.C (Diggin In The Crates) crew led by the late Big L. (For more on the D.I.T.C click here) Regarded as one of the most beloved hip-hop crews in rap music [of its time], D.I.T.C. was made up of several veteran rappers, DJs, and producers “dedicated to the true essence of rap music: original lyrics and strong beat-savvy productions sampling dusty vinyl.” Members and associates include Showbiz & A.G. (Andre the Giant), DJ Premier, Diamond D, Lord Finesse, Fat Joe, O.C., and Buckwild. Other than Fat Joe, most members have never reached the “success” of other multi-platinum artists, but still, Xiao Bizzle thinks they represent the best parts of hip hop.

Lil' Ray and Ghostface

Lil' Ray and Ghostface

One of Beijing’s most notorious Diggaz‘ is Lil’ Ray aka Nasty Ray aka Naughty Ray aka Blacksound aka aka aka…sorry got stuck there for a second.. Ray is also Beijing’s top up-and-coming force in the chip-chop circuit and China’s preeminent Freestyle and Battle rapper. (Click here for more on Lil’ Ray) He and his crew have put together a really tight website called Diggin in Beijing City (D.I.B.C) where they post rare and hard to find CD’s and mixtapes they find around Beijing and online.

(Click here to visit their site and upgrade your Chip- Chop knowledge)

Here is a Lil’ Ray song to let you know how he does things…he and XIV rap the song almost entirely in Beijing Dialect…see if you can hear the difference!

我们都在这儿-We All in Here by Lil’ Ray and XIV (Dirty North Mixtape)

17 我们都在这儿

I myself have taken a few trips to old NvRenJie market with Lil’ Ray to go through vinyl, and his collection is by far Beijing’s best. When I was buying my tables and equipment, Lil Ray and DJ Zoubin were life savers; first, keeping me from getting ripped off and later, after my first attempt to set the equipment up, they showed me how stupid an American college grad can be (Me) when it comes to connecting red to red, white to white…

One recent D.I.B.C. post I also want to highlight is the album feature for 阴三儿 (IN3 pronounced Yin San’r) which most mainland’ers regard as Chip-Chop’s #1 rap crew right now. I will give more details and a bio for IN3 in the future, but for now, click here and download some of their music to get acquainted with IN3‘s 地道(dìdào- Authentic) Dirty North style!
